Crocheted Holiday Ornament and Garland Patterns

The holiday season is the perfect time to add a personal touch to your decorations. Crocheted ornaments and garlands bring warmth, charm, and a handcrafted feel to any space. These crochet patterns offer a fantastic way to create unique holiday decor using bits of yarn from your stash and leftovers. This post shares two of my very own free patterns for crocheted holiday ornaments and garland that are easy to follow and sure to brighten your home.


Details

  • Yarn: Use any weight yarn (yarn weight and preferred hook size will determine size of finished item)

  • Colors: Patterns are written for two colors, but can be worked in a single color if desired

  • Recommended Hook Sizes: (a smaller hook than normal is used for a sturdy ornament)

    • WORSTED: 4.5 mm (US 7) or 5 mm (US H)

    • DK: 3.75 mm (US F) or 4.0 mm (US G) or 4.5 mm (US 7)

    • SPORT: 3.5 mm (US E) or 3.75 mm (US F)

    • FINGERING: 2.75 mm (US C) or 3.25 mm (US D)

  • Gauge: Gauge is irrelevant

  • Notions: Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

  • Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner

  • Finishing:

    • Block the ornaments (steam or wet) to keep their shape

    • Attach a small loop for easy hanging or crochet a long strand and attach-as-you-go for festive garland

** Instructions: Glowdrop Medallion Ornament

With Color A: CH4 and join with SLST to form ring, CH1 (do not turn at the end of each round)

  1. In center of ring, work (SC, CH4) 4x and SLST to first SC to join, CH1 [4 loops created]

  2. In each CH4 loop, work: (SC, HDC, TR, CH2, TR, DC, HDC, SC, CH1) and SLST to first SC to join, CH1 [4 medallion spokes formed]

  3. SC into the CH1 space to the right of the last round's join and then work (CH5, SC in CH2 space, CH5, SC in CH1 space) 4x, omitting the last SC and instead SLST into the first SC worked and fasten off [each spoke of medallion is now outlined]

  4. With Color B: Join yarn and SC into the SC where last round was joined and then work (CH4, SLST in 3rd CH of CH5, CH4, SLST in SC, CH4, SLST in in 3rd CH of CH5, CH4, SC in SC) 4x, omitting the last SC and instead SLST into the first SC worked and fasten off

With Color A: CH6 and join with SLST to form ring, CH1 (do not turn at the end of each round)

  1. In center of ring, work 10 SC [10 STs]

  2. SC in same ST and in next 2, then work 2 HDC in next; 2 DC in next; 2 TR in next; 1 TR in next; 2 TR in next; 2 DC in next; 2 HDC in last, then SLST to first SC to join and fasten off

  3. With Color B: Join yarn to SC furthest to the right and work 1 SC in each of the 3 SCs; 1 HDC in next; 2 HDC in next; 1 DC in next; 2 DC in next; 1 TR in next; 2TR in next; (2 TR, PICOT, 2 TR) in next; 2 TR in next; 1 TR in next; 2 DC in next; 1 DC in next; 2 HDC in next; 1 HDC in next; and SLST to first SC to join, CH1

  4. SC in same SC and next 2, CH1 and turn

  5. SC in each SC, CH1 and turn

  6. SLST in each SC and fasten off


** Instructions: Creating Hangers and Garland

Ornament Hanger

  • Cut a length of yarn 8” and thread through edge of ornament

  • Tie in a knot at the base

  • Holding strands together, make a knot at the end for whatever length you prefer for your hanger

  • Trim any excess approximately 1/8” above the knot


Garland

** Adjust chain lengths as you wish for more or less space between each ornament and for a longer or shorter starting/ending length for the hanging rope; Use as many ornaments as you like and incorporate various sizes and shapes within the same garland for added interest **

  • CH 11 and SLST to first CH to join (creates a loop at the end for hanging)

  • CH 40

  • SC in CH3 space of one of the ornament edges and CH 25

  • REP last instruction, connecting each ornament as you wish

  • Once you’ve connected all the ornaments, work a final CH 50 and slipstitch to the 10th CH to join (creating a hanging loop at the other end)

  • Fasten off and weave in ends
